Sprinkler stains on glass

By Giovanni King, owner of Royal Window Shine · Port St. Lucie, FL · Updated September 2026

Quick answer: Sprinkler stains on glass are mineral deposits left when irrigation water dries on the window. Port St. Lucie, Tradition and St. Lucie West are especially prone because much of the irrigation runs on reclaimed or well water. Removal is a restoration compound applied pane by pane; prevention is adjusting the sprinkler heads and keeping the glass on a regular schedule. Call or text 772-243-1234.

Why Treasure Coast sprinklers stain glass so badly

Reclaimed water, used across Tradition and much of Port St. Lucie for irrigation, carries more dissolved minerals than potable water. Well water, common in Torino and older neighborhoods, carries iron, which leaves rust-colored spotting. Golf-course irrigation adds a second source on fairway lots. All of it dries on the glass daily and builds a layer that normal cleaning can't remove.

Removing sprinkler stains

Mineral-removal restoration compound worked into the glass with a pad, then rinsed and squeegeed. One pane is tested first so you can see what to expect. We don't use razors to scrape spotting off tempered glass and we don't use household descalers, which can damage frames, seals and window film.

Stopping them at the source

Walk the yard while the sprinklers run and note every head that hits glass. Have those heads turned, or replaced with low-angle or side-strip nozzles. Most irrigation companies do this in an hour. Then keep the exterior glass on a recurring schedule so any overspray that still happens never gets time to bond.

Lanai-side sliders are the worst case

Sprinkler heads along the back of the house aim across the lawn and catch the lanai sliders on every cycle. Because sliders are large and low, they show the spotting more than any other glass in the house. If you fix only one head, fix the one nearest the sliders.

Over enough time, yes. Minerals left on glass can etch the surface. The earlier they're treated the more completely they come off.

Why are the stains orange instead of white?

Iron in well water. Common in parts of Port St. Lucie and Fort Pierce. It's removed the same way.
