Impact window care and cleaning

Quick answer: Impact windows are laminated glass and collect the same pollen, salt and sprinkler film as any other window. Clean them with the same scrub-and-squeegee method, never with razor blades, and watch the edges for delamination, which looks like a cloudy strip and isn't a cleaning issue. Impact glass is still glass

The laminate layer is inside the pane; the outer surface is ordinary glass and gets dirty like any window. Pollen, salt film, mineral spotting and fingerprints all apply. Clean it the same way: scrub, squeegee, detail the edges, wipe the sill.

What to avoid

Razor blades. Impact glass is expensive and the outer lite can be tempered; scraping risks permanent scratches. Pressure washers, which can force water into the frame and glazing. Harsh chemicals against the edge seals.

Delamination

A cloudy or milky strip along the edge of an impact pane is the laminate separating from the glass. It isn't dirt and cleaning won't change it. It's a manufacturer or installer conversation, and we'll point it out if we see it.

Window film on impact glass

Film can often be applied to impact glass, but not every film suits every unit and some manufacturers have guidance on it. We check the glass type first and only recommend a film that's appropriate.

Frames and hardware

Impact windows usually have heavier aluminum frames and multipoint locks, and salt corrodes both. Rinsing the frames and tracks with fresh water during a window clean slows it down. If a lock is getting stiff, it's usually salt and grit in the mechanism rather than a failure; a rinse and a dry lubricant from a window company usually fixes it.
