Impact glass and window film: what's safe
Quick answer: window film can usually be applied to impact glass, but not every film suits every unit. Impact windows are laminated and often insulated, and films that absorb a lot of heat can stress certain units. The glass type and any manufacturer guidance should be checked before choosing a film. Done right, film on impact glass gives you heat, glare and UV control on top of storm protection.
What impact glass is
Two or more layers of glass bonded with a plastic interlayer, so the pane holds together when struck. Many impact windows are also insulated (a laminated pane plus an air gap and another pane). The film goes on the interior surface, which is ordinary glass.
Why the film choice matters
Films that absorb a lot of solar energy heat the glass they're on. On a single pane that's fine. On an insulated unit, the inner pane heats while the outer pane stays cooler, and the difference stresses the unit. Some glass and film manufacturers publish guidance on which combinations are appropriate. Reflective and ceramic films that reject heat rather than absorb it are usually the safer choice.
What we check
Whether the unit is laminated only or laminated plus insulated. Whether the glass is tinted or low-e coated. Any manufacturer guidance for that window. Then we recommend one or two films that are appropriate and show samples on the glass.
Cleaning impact glass with film
Same as any filmed glass: no razors, no abrasives, no ammonia against the film. A soft washer, gentle solution and a squeegee. We clean filmed glass on every route.

Can you tint impact windows?
Usually, with a film that's appropriate for the specific unit. We check the glass type and any manufacturer guidance first.
Will window film weaken impact glass?
No. The film sits on the interior surface and doesn't change the laminate. The concern is thermal stress from the wrong film on an insulated unit, which is avoided by choosing correctly.
How do I get a price for film on impact windows?
