Window film bubbling or peeling

By Giovanni King, owner of Royal Window Shine · Port St. Lucie, FL · Updated September 2026

Quick answer: Small water pockets and a light haze in the first few weeks after window film is installed are normal curing and clear on their own. Bubbling or peeling that appears months or years later is film failure: the adhesive or the film itself has broken down, usually from age, heat or a poor installation. Failed film is removed and the glass cleaned before new film goes on. Call or text 772-243-1234.

Normal curing vs. failure

New film cures over a few weeks as moisture from installation works its way out. Slight haziness and small water pockets during that time are normal and disappear. Don't press on them. If bubbles are still there after a couple of months, or if the film wrinkles, cracks or lifts at the edges, that's a failure.

Why film fails

Age: older dyed films break down in Florida heat and turn purple, bubble and peel. Heat load: a dark absorptive film on the wrong type of glass can stress both the film and the glass. Installation: contaminated glass, poor edge sealing or the wrong film for the glass type.

Removing and replacing failed film

Old film is softened, peeled and the adhesive residue removed, then the glass is cleaned to bare, spotless glass before new film is applied. This is slow work and it's the reason film should be installed on properly cleaned glass to begin with.

Storefront film

Commercial film on a south- or west-facing storefront works harder than film on a home and fails sooner if it's a dyed product. When a storefront's film starts bubbling or discoloring, replacing it with a ceramic or reflective film usually solves the problem for the long term and improves heat rejection at the same time.

My new window film has bubbles. Is that normal?

Small water pockets and haze in the first few weeks are normal curing. They clear on their own. Bubbles that remain after a couple of months are not normal.

Why did my window tint turn purple?

Older dyed films break down under UV and heat. It's age, and the fix is replacement.

Can you remove old window film?

Yes. We remove failed film and adhesive, clean the glass to bare, and install new film.
