Hard water spots on windows: what they are and how to get rid of them
Those cloudy white or rust-colored spots on the lower half of your windows aren't dirt. They're minerals left behind when sprinkler or well water dries on the glass. Regular cleaning won't remove them. Here's what will.
What causes hard water spots
Irrigation water on the Treasure Coast is high in calcium, magnesium and often iron. When a sprinkler hits the glass and the water evaporates in the sun, the minerals stay behind. Each cycle adds a layer. After a few months the deposits bond to the glass and look like a permanent haze.
You'll see it most on the lower panes facing lawns and landscaping, on lanai glass near the pool, and on golf-course-facing sliders where course irrigation adds to your own.
Why regular cleaning doesn't work
Window cleaning solution and a squeegee remove dirt sitting on top of the glass. Mineral deposits are chemically bonded to the surface. Scrubbing harder just polishes the haze.
What actually removes them
A mineral-removal restoration compound worked into the glass with a pad dissolves and lifts the deposits. It's slow, pane-by-pane work and the amount of buildup determines how long it takes. A professional should test one window first so you know what the result will look like.
Light to moderate spotting comes off completely. Heavy spotting that's been on the glass for years may have started to etch the surface, which can be improved but not always fully reversed.
What to avoid
Razor blades on tempered glass can leave permanent scratches. Vinegar and household descalers can damage window frames, seals and any tint or coating on the glass, and they rarely touch heavy buildup. Abrasive pads scratch.
Stopping it from coming back
Adjust sprinkler heads so they don't spray the house. Ask your irrigation company about low-angle nozzles for heads near windows. Put the glass on a recurring exterior cleaning schedule so new deposits never get time to bond.

Can hard water stains be permanently removed from glass?
If the minerals haven't etched the glass, yes, completely. If they've been there for years and etched the surface, the appearance can be improved but the etching itself is physical damage to the glass.
Are hard water spots on windows covered by a normal window cleaning?
No. Hard water removal is a separate restoration process and is quoted on site after testing a pane.
Does hard water spotting happen on car windows too?
Yes, from the same sprinklers. The process to remove it is similar.
